New Planting Beds with Tumbled Belgian Edging — Waunakee, WI
A Waunakee homeowner wanted the open lawn behind the house turned into planting beds: long, curving beds with trees and shrubs for privacy and color, and a clean stone border that makes mowing easy.
We marked out about 1,300 square feet of beds and walked the edging line with the homeowner before any digging. The machines worked from plywood mats so the lawn wasn't rutted. The beds were dug out 6 inches, the old soil was hauled away, and the beds were refilled with a 3-inch layer of blended topsoil and compost.
The border is about 220 feet of tumbled Belgian edger, set on a compacted gravel base so it stays level through frost, with the joints sealed. Commercial-grade weed barrier is pinned across every bed and cut to fit around each plant.
We also put in about 60 feet of buried 4-inch drain line, bedded in clean stone and finished at an outlet with a rodent guard. The trench was capped with topsoil and seeded.
Every plant went into its own hole, about twice the width of the root ball, set at the right height and watered in. The planting: 2 Green Giant and 5 American Pillar arborvitae, 2 white Kousa dogwoods, 2 dwarf Korean lilacs, an Autumn Brilliance serviceberry, 4 Endless Summer BloomStruck hydrangeas and 6 Green Velvet boxwoods, with watering bags on the larger trees. A 3-inch layer of shredded mulch finished the beds.
