Artificial Turf for
Dogs and Daycares

Pet turf for doggy daycares, boarding kennels, apartment dog runs and daycare play areas. It drains, rinses clean and stays green where grass wears out.

Pet Turf

Turf for the Spots
Dogs and Kids Wear Out

Grass doesn't last where paws and feet run all day. Turf stays green, drains through, and is ready to use after a rain, with no mud tracked inside.

Doggy Daycares & Boarding

Play yards built to take dogs all day, every day. Pet turf over a stone base that drains, so the yard rinses clean and opens back up fast after rain.

Apartment Dog Runs

A clean spot for residents' dogs in place of the worn strip beside the building. Low upkeep for the property manager, and no mud in the hallways.

Daycares & Schools

Play areas for daycares and schools that hold up to recess every day. We'll walk the site with you and talk through what goes under the turf for your equipment.

What It Costs

Artificial Turf Pricing in Madison, WI

Turf is priced per square foot installed — and the rate drops as project size grows. Final pricing depends on turf product, base preparation requirements, drainage needs, and add-ons like pet-area infill. Here's where pricing starts.

Smaller Projects

Under 500 sq ft

Starting at $22/sq ft

Small dog runs, apartment pet areas, and strips beside a building. Smaller projects carry a higher per-foot rate because base prep, equipment mobilization, and crew setup time stay the same regardless of the square footage installed.

Turf Add-Ons

Built In for the
Dogs Who Use It

These are the add-ons that make a dog yard work. They are planned with the install, so posts, borders and drainage go in with the base instead of after.

Pet Waste Station

A set spot for cleanup: a bag dispenser and a lidded waste can on a post at the edge of the turf, placed one step from the gate or the door.

Ramps & Platforms

Dog ramps, platforms and climb-overs built on site from treated lumber, sized for your dogs and placed where they fit the layout.

Ready-Made Play Pieces

Prefer something off the shelf? Tunnels, jumps and agility pieces can go into the plan too, with a spot set aside for each one.

Stone Edging Border

A clean stone edge around the turf keeps mulch and rock off it and gives the yard a finished line.

Paver Path to the Turf

A paver path from the door to the turf, so paws stay cleaner and the way out stays dry through spring thaw.

Drainage for Pet Areas

Rinse water and snowmelt need somewhere to go. Downspout lines and extra drainage under the base keep a pet area from staying wet.

Each add-on is its own line on the estimate, so you choose what fits your space and your dogs.

What Makes Pet Turf Work Here

It Starts Under the Turf

Urine and rinse water pass through the turf backing and into the base. That base has to drain. Most odor problems come from a base that doesn't, not from the turf, so the base and drainage get planned first.

The Right Infill

Infill sits between the blades. For dog yards, zeolite is the usual choice because it helps hold down ammonia smell. We go over the options with you and pick one for your dogs and your space.

Keeping It Fresh

Pick up solids, hose down the spots dogs use, and use an enzyme cleaner now and then. Turf cuts odor way down, but like any yard with dogs, it needs a rinse.

Snow and Ice

Light snow melts off by itself. For deeper snow, use a plastic shovel and leave about an inch, or set a snow blower at least 2 inches above the turf. No metal blades or plows, and skip the rock salt.

Summer Heat

Turf in full sun gets hotter than grass on a summer afternoon. A quick rinse cools it for a while, and shade helps most. If a run sits in full sun, we'll talk through where to put it.

Built to Stay Put

Dogs dig at edges. A compacted gravel base, a screeded top layer and a secured perimeter keep the turf flat and tight, with a nailer board where it meets concrete.

Madison Mallards Stadium Turf Replacement

Proof of the work: about 1,700 square feet of field turf replaced at Warner Park, from the drain tile up.

What We Did

The Madison Mallards needed a section of field turf replaced at their Warner Park stadium. We took on about 1,700 square feet running out to the concrete wall at the field's edge, tied into the turf already there.

Drainage came first. Drain tile under the old turf had been cut in four places, so we dug each spot up, patched it and extended it. Then we regraded and compacted the gravel base, finishing at a slight pitch so water keeps moving off the surface.

What This Means for Your Project

The base prep, drainage work, and seaming from the Mallards job are the same fundamentals that go into a dog run or a daycare play area.

Turf holds up when the ground under it drains. That's where we start.

The Case for Turf

Why More Properties Are
Going Artificial

No mowing, no seasonal seeding, no watering to keep it green. Just a rinse and a brush now and then.

◎
Low Maintenance

No mowing, no watering, no fertilizing. Once it's installed, all it needs is an occasional rinse and brushing.

◈
Pet Friendly

Our pet-safe turf options are durable, easy to clean, and won't develop muddy patches or dead spots from pet use. Perfect for dog runs, kennels, and play yards.

✦
Ready After a Rain

Water drains through the turf and into the base, so there's no mud and the yard is ready to use again soon after it rains.

◇
Saves Water

The average lawn uses thousands of gallons of water per year. Artificial turf eliminates that entirely — better for the environment and your water bill.

◉
Always Green

Wisconsin winters turn natural grass brown and patchy. Artificial turf stays lush and green 365 days a year — even under snow it bounces right back.

❄
Built to Last

Quality turf typically lasts 15 to 20 years and carries its manufacturer's warranty. We source durable, UV-resistant materials that hold up to Wisconsin's extreme seasonal conditions.

Common Questions

Turf Questions, Answered Honestly

The questions that come up most before going artificial — answered straight, without sales fluff. If yours isn't here, just call or text.

How long does artificial turf last?

A properly installed premium-grade turf typically lasts 15 to 20 years with normal use. Commercial-grade turf and sports-grade products can last longer. What actually determines lifespan isn't the turf — it's the base. Turf installed on a proper compacted aggregate base with appropriate drainage outlasts turf installed on dirt or thin sand prep by years. UV resistance also matters: cheaper products fade noticeably in the Wisconsin sun within 5 to 7 years, while premium UV-stabilized turf holds its color for the full lifespan.

Is artificial turf safe and clean for dogs?

Yes. We use specifically rated pet turf products with antimicrobial backing, increased permeability, and odor-resistant infill. Urine drains straight through the turf and infill into the base layer below, then disperses naturally. Solid waste is picked up the same as on grass. For dog runs and kennels, we typically recommend an antimicrobial infill (like Zeolite or T°Cool) that traps ammonia and keeps the area smelling clean. Rinsing the area periodically with a hose keeps it fresh.

Does artificial turf get too hot in the summer?

This is a legitimate concern — older turf products could get noticeably hot in direct summer sun. Modern premium turf products use cooling technology (often called HeatBlock, T°Cool, or similar) that significantly reduces surface temperature on hot days. For applications with bare feet, kids, or pets, we recommend turf with built-in cooling tech plus a cooling infill. In shaded areas or with proper product selection, summer heat is rarely an issue. We discuss product selection during the in-person consultation so the turf fits your specific use.

How does artificial turf handle Wisconsin snow and winter?

Excellent, actually — turf handles winter better than natural grass. The blades stay green under the snow, and as snow melts, water drains right through the permeable backing into the base. There's no slush buildup, no muddy spring transition, no need to reseed dead patches. For snow removal, a plastic shovel or a leaf blower works fine. Metal shovels and salt should be avoided since they can damage the fibers, but a snowblower with proper settings is safe. Come spring, your turf looks the same as it did in October.

Can turf go over concrete?

Yes. For solid surfaces like a concrete pad or courtyard, we install a specialty shock pad underlayment to provide cushioning and drainage, then the turf goes on top with proper edging. The base requirements are different from ground installs, but the finished result performs just as well.

How long does a turf installation take?

Most dog runs and play areas take 2 to 5 working days from start to finish. A standard 500-1,500 sq ft installation typically runs 3 to 4 days — one day for excavation and base prep, one day for compaction and drainage, and one to two days for turf laying, seaming, and infill. Larger commercial projects scale accordingly. We don't rush base prep regardless of timeline pressure — proper compaction and drainage are what make the turf last 20 years instead of 5.

Do I need to maintain artificial turf at all?

Compared to natural grass, almost nothing — no mowing, watering, fertilizing, weed-killing, or seeding. The minimal maintenance turf does need: occasional rinsing to keep the blades clean (especially for pet areas), brushing the fibers in high-traffic zones to keep them standing upright, and removing debris like leaves with a leaf blower. For commercial installations, we offer annual grooming services to keep the turf looking new.

What kind of warranty do you offer on turf installations?

All of our turf installations come with a written 1-year workmanship warranty from the day we finish. If our installation has a defect, we fix it at no charge, labor included. The turf itself carries the manufacturer's warranty. Our commercial work, including the Madison Mallards stadium installation, is backed by the same workmanship standards. See our warranty page for the full terms.
