Stadium Turf Replacement — Warner Park, Madison, WI
The Madison Mallards needed a section of field turf at their Warner Park stadium replaced. We took on about 1,700 square feet running out to the concrete wall at the field's edge, tied into the turf that was already there and set to match the field's grade.
Drainage came first. Drain tile under the old turf had been cut in four places, so we dug each spot up, patched the tile and extended it about ten feet from the inner field out to the wall, then backfilled and compacted it so the field drains the way it should.
Then the base: we regraded and compacted it with 3/4 inch crushed road gravel to meet the existing field, finishing at a slight 1/8 inch pitch so water keeps moving off the surface.
The new turf joins the existing field with 6 inch seam tape and turf adhesive along the full seam, and about 450 feet of edge is held down with 6 inch galvanized spikes. Along the wall we fastened a pressure-treated nailer board just below the top of the concrete, so the turf finishes flush and stays put.
While we were on the field we also replaced the softball pitcher's landing area, re-laid turf sections by the dugout, and brushed sand and crumb-rubber infill into about 1,200 square feet.
